BSMRSTU expels 5 students, suspends another for attacking fellow students

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj has expelled five students and suspended another for their involvement in attacking fellow students during their demonstration against former vice chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Khondoker Md Nasiruddin.

An official order, signed by Registrar Prof Dr Md Nuruddin Ahmed, was issued in this regard on Sunday, following a decision taken by the university's disciplinary board.

The permanently expelled students are Rafijul Islam, Nuruddin Nahid, Ariful Islam Sakib, Md Mazharul Islam Mishon, and Rahat Al Ahsan.

At the same time, another student, Ismail Sheikh, has been suspended for two semesters.

The six students were from the university’s Management Studies department.

Earlier, a five member probe team, including the proctor and registrar, submitted its report to the university's disciplinary committee in this regard, in the first week of November.

On September 21, at least 20 students were injured in attacks orchestrated by the supporters of former VC Nasiruddin, at places in Gopalganj town on their way to the university.

Students of BSMRSTU had been then demonstrating on campus demanding the resignation of the former VC for his irregularities and corruption.

On September 30, Prof Khondoker Md Nasiruddin stepped down amid protests when a probe committee formed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) found evidence of irregularities and corruption on the part of the VC.
