College girl pressured to withdraw case after rapist walks free on bail

A female college student, who was raped on January 19 in Sonadanga upazila of Khulna, has been threatened again with dire consequences if she does not withdraw a case filed over the incident. Three unidentified youths on a motorbike issued the threat on Monday morning in front of the victim's house, just four days after the prime and only accused, Enamul Haq Titu, secured bail, she mentioned in a general diary lodged later in the day. On April 20, after Enamul was freed on bail, the victim's family approached to Khulna Sadar police to file a GD seeking security, but the latter then refused to register their complaint. When contacted, Assistant Commissioner SM Mohaimenur Rashid of Sadar zone police said that they did not find it important to accept the GD then, because the accused was released on the condition that his bail will be scrapped if he threatens the victim or her family. Meanwhile, the victim said that the people loyal to Titu, 50, has been frightening them since the case was filed with Sonadanga police station on March 15. After charges against Titu were pressed on April 14, Sonadanga police station's Officer-in-Charge Mamtazul Haq said that the evidence supporting the rape was not found primarily because of delayed medical tests of the victim. According to locals, Titu, an influential and wealthy person, is in good terms with local ruling party leaders.
