Wholesaler fined for selling onions at high prices in Chittagong

A mobile court in Chittagong has fined a Khatunganj market wholesaler Tk20,000 for selling onions at very high prices.

Executive Magistrate Towhidul Islam led the mobile court drive on Wednesday at Khatunganj Market.

The fined wholesaler was identified as Mahin Enterprise.

During the drive, the mobile court discovered that some Khatunganj market wholesalers were selling onions at Tk70-80 per kg. The onions were imported from Egypt and China at Tk29 and Tk27 per kg, respectively.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Executive Magistrate Towhidul said they conducted drives for the fourth day at the wholesale market to contain the skyrocketing price of onions.

“Mahin Enterprise was selling onions at abnormally high prices.  As per Control of Essential Commodities Act-1956, the errant wholesaler (commission agent) was fined Tk20,000 for hiking onion prices exorbitantly,” the executive magistrate said.
