4 JU teachers announce resignation over attack on protesters

Four teachers have declared to resign from the executive board of Teachers’ Association of JU, over the attack on protesters, who have been demanding Vice Chancellor Farzana Islam’s resignation.

Jahangirnagar University (JU) Teachers’ Association General Secretary Prof Md Sohel Rana, Treasurer Prof Monowar Hossain Tuhin, member Prof Mahbub Kabir, and Prof Sayeed Ferdous, will send their resignation letters to the association President Prof Ajit Kumar on Tuesday night.

General Secretary Prof Md Sohel Rana confirmed the matter.

Prof Sohel said: "Both students and teachers were injured and humiliated in the attack. But we could not do anything aside from calling it an unfortunate incident.

"We could not ask for justice," he said. "Then how did we perform our duties as members of the teachers association?"

He added: "I do not think we [the teachers association] could play any fruitful role, either on behalf of the students or the teachers. That is why we decided to resign."

Earlier in the day, at least 25 were injured in an attack allegedly by Chhatra League during a protest program, demanding resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam.

The protesters were attacked by a group of alleged Chhatra League men, led by the university's Chhatra League President Jewel Rana, around 12pm while staging a sit-in protest in front of the vice chancellor's residence.
