A mobile court has fined four wholesalers, with a total amount of Tk1.30 lakh, for selling onions at inflated prices at Khatunganj market in Chittagong.
The court, led by Executive Magistrate Touhidul Islam, conducted the drive at over one hundred warehouses on Sunday afternoon and found evidence of price inflation.
Ochhiuddin Traders and Ms Khatunganj Trading were fined with Tk40,000 and Tk50,000 respectively, while Soumik Traders and Bengal Traders were fined with Tk20,000 each.
“Onions imported from Myanmar were purchased at Tk42 per kg. However, the same onions were being sold at Tk90-110 per kg in the warehouses,” the magistrate said.
As the mobile court began their drive, the commission agents involved in the price hike fled the spot.
The price of Myanmar onions dropped to Tk70-75 per kg soon after the drive.
