Shilpi Khatun, 40, was allegedly framed as a thief and assaulted by her husband and in-laws, in the Anantabala village of Shibganj upazila of Bogra on Friday.
Sources said Shilpi, a construction worker, and her colleague, Md Rafi, secretly got married nine months ago, and the couple moved in together in Thengamara village.
Rafi later left her and went to stay with his parents after the couple had some marital problems. When Shilpi went to her in laws’ house to meet her husband, they, along with her husband, tied her up in on their farmland and beat her up.
They alleged that she was stealing their crops.
Rainagar Union Chairman Shafikul Islam said, on information from the locals, he rescued Shilpi and handed her over to the police.
Confirming the incident to Dhaka Tribune, Shibganj police station OC Mizanur Rahman said: "Shilpi was beaten up by the locals for supposedly damaging Rafi's farmland.
We rescued and brought her to the station, but she did not file any complaint; the family, which had alleged that she was a thief, did not file any complaint either."
"However, we filed a General Diary over the incident," the OC added.
The video recording of the beating went viral on social media later on Sunday, leading to a nationwide call for justice.
Shilpi’s brother Mamun said they will file a case against Rafi's family for assaulting his sister.
