S Alam sugar factory fined Tk5 lakh

The Department of Environment (DoE) has fined S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Limited in Chittagong Tk5 lakh for discharging untreated liquid waste into Karnaphuli River.

DoE Director (Chittagong region) Moazzam Hossain imposed the fine on Wednesday as the factory was running without an operational Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), according to a DoE press release.

A team of DoE’s Chittagong Divisional Laboratory had found the factory’s ETP inoperative during an inspection on September 11.

They had collected samples from Karnaphuli after discovering that the factory was channelling untreated liquid waste into the river without proper treatment.

The factory was fined after lab tests revealed that the samples were beyond the parameters set by the Environment Conservation Rules.
