Students of the department of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering (ETE) in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science & Technology University staged a sit-in protest to press home their demand of merging the department in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department.
Students continued the sit-in protest for the second consecutive day in their varsity building on Monday morning, and wrapped it up on 1 pm. The protesters have also boycotted their classes, and examination since October 17.
A third year student, Kamrul Hasan of the ETE department said: "Day by day, job opportunities for our department is shrinking compared to the EEE department. As the syllabus of our department is 90 percent similar to EEE department, we want our department to merge into it.
"We have submitted a memorandum in this regard more than once, to no avail. But now we will go on a tougher movement if our demand is not met."
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahjahan said: "We have informed the authorities about the matter. But the demands cannot be addressed unless a new vice-chancellor is appointed."
