Prof Rezaul’s colleagues, students demand death for killers

The teachers and students of Rajshahi University have sought the prime minister’s interference in the investigation of Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddique murder. They formed a human chain and held a rally on the campus Sunday under the banner of RU Teachers’ Association (Ruta) to mark the first anniversary of death of the English department teacher. Police submitted the charge sheet on November 6 last year accusing eight militants.

Four of the accused are in jail, three others have been killed in alleged gunfights with the law enforcers, while the mastermind is on the run. Ruta President Prof Nazrul Islam demanded that the government take proper measures to stop the series of murders of teachers and students at the university. Former Ruta president Prof Shahidullah expressed frustration over the sluggish trial process. ”The police have pressed charges in the case, but there is no update after that. We want to see the killers hanged,” he said.

The agitating teachers and students also submitted a memorandum to the Rajshahi police superintendent seeking quick trial in the case. They also asked the police to ensure congenial atmosphere on the campus – a stronghold of radical Islamists – for everyone. Sociology department teacher Prof AKM Shafiul Islam was hacked by assailants near his house at Chouddopai area of Rajshahi on November 15, 2014. Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) claimed responsibiity for the murder. On February 1, 2006, geography department's Prof S Taher was hacked inside the university's residential area. RU economics department's Prof Dr Younus was hacked by assailants while he was waking in Binodpur area on December 28, 2004.
