The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has detained an office assistant in Jamalpur General Hospital with over Tk100,000 he took as bribe.
The man, identified as Golam Mostofa Khokon, was taken into custody during a raid carried out by the anti-graft watchdog at the hospital’s administration building on Wednesday afternoon, said ACC Tangail office Deputy Director Mostafizur Rahman.
He said they also recovered Tk133,032 on his person and from an armoire.
But the ACC official did not confirm whether Khokon received that money as bribe.
Mostafizur, who also led the drive, told reporters that Khokon had demanded Tk36,000 from 24 nurses — Tk1,500 each — as bribe to disburse their entertainment allowance.
Based on this information, he added, ACC conducted the raid on Wednesday and detained Khokon while he was receiving the bribe from the nurses.
Mostafizur added their preliminary investigation also found proof that Khokon took bribe from many hospital staff by withholding their pay slips and blocking applications for maternity leave.
The ACC official said Khokon would be produced before a court after an FIR (first information report) was filed.
