A man has died of dengue at Kushtia General Hospital in Kushtia.
He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital around 2:15am on Sunday.
The deceased is Shamim Biswas, 30, son of Rafiqul Biswas of Kaghathia village under Rifaitpur union in Daulatpur upazila of the district.
He was admitted to the hospital after being diagnosed with dengue around 3:20pm on October 5, Kushtia Civil Surgeon Dr Rowshan Ara Begum told Dhaka Tribune.
So far, dengue has claimed five lives in Kushtia, Dr Rowshan said.
However, this is the first death caused by dengue in Kushtia General Hospital, she added.
Dengue situation in Bangladesh
A total of 269 dengue patients have been admitted to different hospitals across Bangladesh in the last 24 hours.
Till 8am on Saturday, 60 new patients were admitted in Dhaka and 209 in districts outside Dhaka.
Dengue, a mosquito-borne virus, spreads among humans through its carrier, the Aedes mosquito.
The Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), in a press release issued on Saturday, said the number of patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals in the country was 1,477.
A total of 81 dengue patients have died across Bangladesh from January 1 till October 5, according to their own collected data. However, the unofficial death toll is reported to be around 171, so far.
As many as 495 patients are currently receiving treatment in 41 government and private hospitals in Dhaka, whereas 982 people are undergoing treatment outside Dhaka, the DGHS data said.
Since January 1 till October 5, as many as 89,616 people have been affected by dengue.
Among those admitted, a total of 87,903 have been released from their respective hospitals and clinics after treatment.
