Jessore gang rape: Case handed over to PBI

The case filed over the gang rape of a woman in Sharsha upazila of Jessore has been handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).

The documents were handed over to PBI on Friday afternoon, Jessore Additional Superintendent of police, Salahuddin Shikder, said.

PBI has already started their investigation, Salahuddin said.

KMH Jahangir, additional superintendent of Jessore PBI, said: "The case documents of the gang rape that took place in Sharsha, were handed over to us on Friday afternoon."

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Jessore PBI Monaem Hossain Khan is the investigation officer, Jahangir said.

When contacted, SI Monaem told this correspondent: "After receiving the case documents, I inspected the site where the incident took place, and talked with the victim. All evidence related to the case are also being collected."

Meanwhile, when a team of Nari o Shishu Odhikar Forum (Women and Children's Rights Forum) visited the victim at her residence on Friday morning, she told them she was too afraid to mention sub-inspector Khairul's name in the case statement as an accused.

However, she demanded exemplary punishment for SI Khairul, and the four others she had mentioned in the case.

The victim, a resident of Lakshmanpur area of Sharsha upazila in Jessore, was raped reportedly by SI Khairul, in-charge of Gorpara police camp, and his informant Kamrul, after they came to her place demanding payment of Tk50,000 in exchange for the release from jail of her husband, a former drug mule.

The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday.

The incident came to media attention after the victim went to Jessore General Hospital on Tuesday morning for medical tests.

Although the results of the tests showed evidences of rape, the doctors failed to confirm the identities of the perpetrators without conducting a DNA test.

Police formed a three-member probe committee after the victim lodged a case with Sharsha police station on Tuesday night, accusing four people.

Among the four, three were named: Kamrul, Abdul Latif, and Abdul Quader. SI Khairul's name was not included.
