A Rohingya man, the prime suspect in Juba League leader Omar Faruk's murder case, has been killed in a reported gunfight in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf upazila.
Deceased Nur Mohammad, 35, came to the limelight after he held an ear piercing ceremony of his daughter on August 22, and received one kilogramme of gold, Tk4,500,000 in cash, and many other materials as gifts.
Earlier, police arrested Nur Mohammad, suspect in several cases, from Jadimora Rohingya camp at Teknaf's Nhilla union on Saturday evening.
During interrogation, he revealed to police the location of his hideout in the nearby hilly area, Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das said.
"Some Rohingyas opened fired on police, and tried to snatch away Nur when a police team raided the hideout.
"Nur, along with 3 policemen, were injured during the incident around 5am on Sunday."
Police admitted Nur to Teknaf Health Complex in critical condition.
Later, he was transferred to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for better treatment, where the duty doctors declared him dead.
His body was sent to the hospital's morgue for autopsy, the OC added.
Police also recovered five firearms, and 38 rounds of bullets from the scene.
However, he was holding a smart national identity card (6004589963) where his date of birth was is November, 25, 1983.
Murder of Juba League leader
Juba League leader Omar, 30, was shot dead at Jadimura in Teknaf on August 22.
His elder brother Osman Goni alleged that a group of Rohingyas picked Faruk up from near his house, and shot him dead at a nearby hill.
Earlier, three other suspects of the murder case were killed in separate “gunfights” in the district.
Suspected robber killed in Sylhet 'gunfight'
An accused in eight robbery cases has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Beanibazar of Sylhet.
The deceased Misbah Uddin, 27, son of Alim Uddin was a resident of neighbouring Jokiganj upazila.
Sylhet Additional Police Superintendent (Media) Mohammad Aminul said that Misbah was a member of an inter-district robber gang, and an accused in six robbery cases.
After arresting Misbah from Sheola area, a police team conducted a drive in Sheola bridge area of Beanibazar to recover arms and ammunition, he said.
On the way, the associates of Misbah opened fire on police, and tried to snatch him away, said the police official, adding: "In self defence police returned fire, triggering a gunfight."
At one stage, accused Misbah tried to escape the scene but was gunned down.
Later, Misbah was taken to Beanibazar Health Complex, where the on-duty medical officer declared him dead.
Meanwhile, police recovered a home-made pipe gun, five rounds of bullets, six magazines, two machetes, and a long sharp sword.
A case was filed with Beanibazar Police station.
