Number of fresh dengue cases continues to fall

The number of fresh dengue cases has seen a sharp fall over the last few days, with 760 patients hospitalized in the 24 hours from 8am on Friday to the same time on Saturday.

Previously, 1,025 patients were hospitalized with dengue on August 30, and 1,189 on August 29.

93% of dengue patients admitted to hospitals across the country have so far been released, although two people died from the mosquito-borne disease on Saturday in Khulna and Chittagong, respectively.

Shilpi Begum, 45, died of dengue at around 1:30pm, undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College and Hospital (KMCH), said KMCH Resident Physician Shoilendranath Biswas.

Shilpi, of Atlia village in the district's Terokhada upazila, had been suffering from hemorrhagic dengue fever and was admitted to the hospital on Friday, he added.

The physician said a total of seven people have now died from dengue in Khulna.

In Chittagong, Badsha Molla, 55, of Dakkhin Salimpur village in Sitakunda upazila of the district, died from dengue at Parkview Hospital in the city early Saturday, confirmed Chittagong Civil Surgeon Office Medical Officer (Disease Control), Mohammad Nurul Haider.

He said: "Badsha Molla died at the hospital undergoing treatment, at around 5am."

Badsha, who had also been suffering from diabetes and cardiac complications, was admitted to the hospital, being diagnosed with dengue on August 22, Nurul Haider added.

This was the first death from dengue in the district, the medical officer continued.

The Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said a total of 57 dengue patients have died across Bangladesh from January 1 to August 31. However, the unofficial death toll is reported to be over 126 so far.

The dengue menace 

Dengue spreads among humans through its carrier, the Aedes mosquito.

In 2019, as many as 70,195 people have been affected by dengue from January to August, according to the DGHS.

Of those admitted to hospitals, as of Saturday, 65,150 or 93%, were released from their respective hospitals and clinics following treatment, said a DGHS bulletin.

Of the 760 patients admitted to different hospitals across Bangladesh in 24hours till 8am on Saturday, 349 patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka, and 411 to hospitals in districts outside the capital.

4,860 patients are currently undergoing treatment for dengue at various hospitals, including 2,696 in Dhaka and 2,164 in the rest of the country, the DGHS statement added.
