The devastating erosion of the Padma River has taken a serious turn in Goalondo of the Rajbari district over the last few weeks.
Many establishments including mosques, houses, schools and shops in the Daulatdia and Debogram unions have been washed way due to heavy currents in the river over last three weeks.
Hundred acres of cropland went under water in the Dallapara and Debogram unions, while locals are passing their days in uncertainty.
Daulatdia ferry terminal in Rajbari's Goalanda is under serious threat of being entirely devoured by the mighty Padma river, says BIWTC, which supervises ferry service at the terminal.
Locals fear the Daulatdia berthing point in Rajbari may get swept away anytime due to erosion by the Padma, which is going to eventually cause a disruption to the Paturia-Daulatdia ferry service.
Masud Rana of the Beparipara village in Daulatdia said the launch and ferry Ghats are at risk as the river erosion has taken serious turn in recent times.
While 75-year-old Taijuddin Sheikh said he had lost everything due to the erosion, 55-year-old Fulbanu of the village blamed the administration not for doing its work appropriately.
Nurul Islam, former chairman of the Daulatdia union council urged the government to take initiatives immediately to protect the area from river erosion.
Necessary steps are needed immediately, said also officials of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC).
Due to the rise in the water level it becomes a tough job to keep the ferry service normal, said Water Development Board Deputy Engineer Arif Sarker.
He said the water has increased by 7.88 centimeters in the river in last five days.
Water Development Board had dumped a large number of sand bags in the river to protect the area from erosion, he added.
