College student dies of dengue in Gazipur

A college student has died of dengue at Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital in Gazipur.

The deceased was identified as Mehedi Hasan Mim Talukder, 17, an eleventh grader of  Govt Haji Korop Ali Memorial Degree College and son of Aminul Islam MonnuTalukder from Haluakandi village in Kamarkhand upazila of Sirajganj district.

Dr Faridul Islam, resident medical officer of the hospital, said Mehedi was admitted to the hospital with dengue fever on August 14 and died at 8 pm on Saturday, reports UNB.

Family members blamed negligence of doctors and nurses of the hospital for Mehedi’s death.

Record number of dengue patients this year  

A record 50,000 people have been hospitalized with dengue this year, according to data provided by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). 

The DGHS Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room said around 1,719 dengue patients had been admitted to different hospitals across the country in the last 24 hours till 8am yesterday, taking the total number of patients to be hospitalized with dengue to 49,999.

The DGHS also said 84% of the patients (42,243 people) have already been released from their respective hospitals and clinics after being treated.

Although the official dengue death toll from the DGHS stands at 40 this year, the unofficial count from media reports is over 99.
