Missing IT specialist stays silent after return

IT specialist Ataur Rahman Shahin, who went missing from Dhaka’s Tejgaon area on May 2, has not saidmuch to his family since he returned home.

“Shahin spends time with his family, but he remains quiet most of the time. When relatives visit to meet him, he talks with them. However, he has not said anything about what happened to him," said his brother-in-lawRabiul Islam.

When this correspondent asked to speak toShahin, Rabiul said it was not possible as Shahinhad gone to his village home in Gaibandha to meet with his parents on Tuesdaymorning.

Upon being asked for Shahin's phone number, Rabiul said: "We have got him back, which is enough for us. He is not in any position to speak now, he is still in trauma."

Rabiul further said Shahin will undergo physical and psychiatric treatment, even though there were no signs of injury on his body.

"We do not want anybody to disturb Shahin right now," he added.

On July 3, Shahin’s wife Tania Akter had sought help from the government and police to find her missing husband at a press briefing. 

According to Tania, Shahin was picked up by unknown miscreants from Tejgaon on May 2. A case was filed with Tejgaon industrial police station two days later.

Tania said: "On the CCTV camera footage, I saw Shahin get out of his office around 7:22pm on May 2. He was waiting for a ride-sharing motorcycle when some miscreants dragged him into a white microbus and drove off."

Since then, his phone had been switched off.

Tania later went to meet the speaker of parliament, the home minister, and the National Human Rights Commission to seek assistance in finding her missing husband.
