Police on Wednesday arrested three people in two separate incidents of unsupervised surgeries on two women, which resulted in their deaths and of a newborn.
In Noakhali, police arrested the owner and a ward boy of a private hospital for conducting an unsupervised C-section on a woman, leading to her death along with her newborn in the Senbag upazila.
The arrested were, Harun-ur-Rashid, the owner and Amirul Islam, ward-boy of The New Central Hospital.
The victim’s family filed a case accusing five people on Wednesday.
Sources said, the deceased Bibi Kulsum, 19, a pregnant woman in labor, was taken to the hospital on Wednesday night. The owner along with the nurses and ward boys performed a C-section on her without any doctoral supervision. After the surgery, her conditioned worsened and she was being transferred to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital. But, Kulsum and her newborn child died on the way.
Senbag police station OC Mijanur Rahman confirmed the incident to Dhaka Tribune and said: "Acting on the case, we conducted a drive at the hospital and arrested the duo. We are trying to arrest the remaining suspects, who are currently on the run."
"We sent the dead bodies to the Noakhali General Hospital morgue," the OC added.
Locals said, the hospital was fined Tk50,000 few days back for absence of legal documents and wrong treatment of patients.
In Dinajpur, police arrested a hospital manager in Birampur for forcing a woman to undergo surgery based on outdated reports.
The arrested, Farzana Yasmin Joly, reportedly forced the surgery which resulted in the death of Reshma Khatun Bijli, 36.
The deceased’s family members filed a case accusing four individuals following the incident.
According to the case statement, on Wednesday, Reshma was admitted to Anasha Hospital and Diagnostic Center for uterine complications. The hospital manager Joly deceived the patient’s family into thinking an immediate surgery was required. The surgeon, Dr Moshiur Rahman, without any prior tests operated on the patient leading to her death.
Birampur police station OC Monirujjaman Monir confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune and said: "Hearing about the incident, we made a drive to the hospital and arrested Joly.
"The victim’s dead body has been sent to the Dinajpur Medical College Hospital morgue," he added.
Deputy Magistrate and UNO Touhidur Rahman said: "When we raided the hospital it was void of staff. We found three patients on the operating beds with no doctors or nurses. All activities of the hospital were immediately suspended."
