The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR has donated 3,550 tents to Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) to help flood affected families in Bangladesh.
UNHCR provided tents to the families who were affected by torrential monsoon rains and floods earlier this month.
The first batch of the emergency tents was handed over to BDRCS at a ceremony held at UNHCR's warehouse in Cox's Bazar on Thursday.
The tents are fire resistant and worth approximately $2million, said a press statement by UNHCR.
Head of UNHCR operations and Cox's Bazar sub-office, Marin Din Kajdomcaj, said: "We received a plea from BDRCS to help thousands of displaced villagers across Bangladesh, following non-stop heavy rains and rising river levels, earlier in this month."
"We had pre-positioned some emergency shelters in Cox's Bazar and Chittagong warehouses, as a part of contingency preparation under Rohingya refugee response program," he added.
“UNHCR is ready and feels happy to make this small contribution by extending support to these families in their time of need,” Kajdomcaj concluded.
The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief reported that as of now, 2.3 million people were affected in 20 of Bangladesh’s 64 districts due to this flood caused by torrential monsoon rains.
