Ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia route in the Padma River has been disrupted due to heavy currents and high water level in the river.
Around 400 cargo trucks and covered vans have been stuck for the last two to three days on the route – which is one of the main ferry routes in Bangladesh.
"At this moment, there are around 400 loaded trucks stuck on the route," Md Azmal Hossain, Deputy General Manager of Aricha unit of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), said.
"Primarily, we are trying to move the highway buses to minimize passenger suffering," he said. "Police are trying to control the situation; however, passengers should stay alert before deciding to use this route."
Md Abdus Sobhan, assistant general manager of the Marine Division of BIWTC Paturia terminal said heavy flow of the river hampered the normal movement of the ferry and caused a delay and decrease in ferry trips.
To control the situation, police restricted movement of hundreds of cargo trucks at their check posts near Jagir area of Dhamrai upazila in Manikganj.
Police Superintendent of Paturia terminal police station, Rifat Rahman Shamim, said: "We are allowing highway buses and private cars to move to avoid traffic congestion, and facilitate the passengers.
"However, trucks carrying perishable items and baby food are also being moved as early as possible," he added.
He advised everyone to use alternative routes due to the heavy congestion on the Paturia-Daulatdia route.
