Police kill suspected drug dealer in Pabna 'gunfight'

A suspected drug dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Pabna on Thursday. 

The deceased was identified as Wali Ullah, 31, a resident of Shanila village in Bera upazila. 

Police claimed Wali Ullah was a drug dealer and a member of an inter-district robbery gang. 

He was accused in eight cases of drugs and robbery filed with different police stations in Pabna and Shahjadpur police station in Sirajganj, police said. 

Bera police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahid Mahmud said they arrested Wali Ullah on Wednesday.

Based on his information, a team of police conducted a drive along with him in Jordaha area in Bera around 3am on Thursday to recover narcotics and arms, OC Shahid said.

Wali’s associates were alarmed by the presence of the law enforcement agency, and opened fire on police, prompting them to shoot back, according to the police officer.

Wali was shot several times during the shootout while his cohorts managed to flee the scene.

He was taken to Bera Upazila Health Complex where he succumbed to his injuries around 5:30am, the OC said. 

Sub-Inspector Shamsul Islam and three constables - Md Rezaul Karim, Md Abdul Hannan, and Md Abdul Wahed - were also injured in the gunfight, he claimed. They took primary treatment at the same hospital.

Police recovered a pistol, a locally assembled firearm, six bullets, two magazines, and 17 bottles of phensedyl from the spot.
