Amit Muhuri, a listed criminal who was accused in 15 cases, including murders, was killed in a reported brawl with a prisoner at the Chittagong Central Jail.
Amit, 32, who was arrested on September 2, 2017, over the murder of his friend Imranul Karim Emon, sustained severe injuries during the fight, and died while undergoing treatment at a local hospital around 1am yesterday.
According to jail sources, Amit Muhuri was involved in the fight with inmate Ripon Nath in cell number 32 on Wednesday night.
At one stage, Ripon reportedly hit him on his head with a brick. Critically injured, Amit was rushed to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) around 11:30pm where he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Confirming it, CMCH police outpost’s in-charge Inspector Jahirul Islam said: "We were informed that Amit was inflicted with severe head injuries following a fight with an inmate inside the jail.”
“Later, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital around 1am on Thursday,” he said.
Quoting an on-duty doctor, Jahirul said the top terrorist died due to head injuries.
Amit’s followers vandalize hospital
Amit’s followers thronged the hospital soon after the news of his death spread. Later, they vandalized the neurosurgery department of the hospital.
Being informed, police went to the spot and dispersed them, Jahirul added.
When contacted, Jailor Nasir Ahmed of the Chittagong Central Jail said they were investigating what led the inmates to engage in a fierce fight.
About the motive behind the fight, he said: “We are quizzing Ripon Nath who hit Amit Muhuri with a brick chip.
"So far, there had no previous enmity between the two. We are investigating into the incident," said the jailor.
Meanwhile, the jail authorities lodged a case with Kotwali police station yesterday morning against Ripon in this connection.
Afterwards, the Detective Branch (North) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) started investigating the case and a team of detectives already inspected the crime scene.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs has assigned Additional District Magistrate Mashhud Ul Kabir to investigate into the incident and was asked to submit the report within three working days.
Amit Muhuri and his crime history
The eldest of two sons of Arun Muhuri, Amit was a resident of the Raozan upazila in Chittagong. He sat for his HSC examinations in 2010. Afterwards, he got involved in criminal activities and formed a criminal ring of his own.
He first came to the spotlight after a double murder in the city's CRB area. Two people, including an eight-year-old boy, were killed during a gunfight between Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists over a railway tender on June 24, 2013.

Amit used to identify him as a Jubo League leader and was known to be a follower of Central Jubo League leader Helal Akbar Chowdhury Babor.
Amit rented a flat for Tk20,000 in the Harish Dutta Lane of the Nandankanon area in the port city in March 2017, which he used as a “torture cell”.
He lived with his wife Chaity on the fifth floor of the six-storey building “Bengal Holding.”
Neighbours in the building allege they would hear people cry out in the dead of the night. Many alleged Amit brought people there to torture them for money.
Amit’s last victim was his friend Imranul Karim Emon. He not only chopped up Emon into pieces but also disfigured his body by putting it in a drum filled with acid.
On the night of August 9, 2017, Amit called Emon to his house in Nandankanon of the port city. He along his cohorts first killed Emon by strangling and stabbing him simultaneously.
They then put his body in the drum filled with acid, which was finally recovered on August 13. However, Amit fled to Comilla by shaving his face and head in order to disguise himself.
To further throw law enforcement off his track, Amit admitted himself to a drug rehabilitation centre. But on September 2, the police finally caught up to him. Although they were initially skeptical about his identity, it was his name tattooed on his neck that gave Amit away.
He finally confessed to killing Emon for reportedly having an extramarital relationship with his wife Chaity.
Amit used to collect toll from the businessmen of Cinema Palace, DC Hill, Laldighi, Reazuddin Bazar and New Market areas. None dared to complain to the police fearing his reprisal.
Earlier, the 2013 double murder in CRB over the railway tender led to his arrest on November 5, 2015. But he was released on bail promptly.
He was seen firing a pistol in broad daylight in Jhautala on April 28, 2017. And police arrested him again on May 25 that year. But just after a month, he walked out of prison on bail on June 26, 2017.
There were many more counts of him getting arrested and getting out on bail – a scenario which is shockingly similar to a swivel door.
