A Rangpur court yesterday sentenced five people to 13 years in imprisonment in a case filed for sexually harassing a college girl in Rangpur.
The convicts were identified as: Manik Mia, Ratan, Babla, Rana and Maleka Begum.
Rangpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Jabid Hossain gave the order in the case which was filed 24 years ago.
According to court sources, on July 1, 1996, the prime suspect Manik and his associates sexually harassed the girl and tried to abduct her near her residence in Mandalpara.
The girl fought back and managed to save herself. However, unable to bear the humiliation she later committed suicide.
Subsequently, the girl’s mother had filed a case with the Rangpur Kotwali police station in this connection.
