PM orders stern action against Nusrat’s killers

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed law enforcement agencies to bring to book, and take stern action against, the killers of madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

Confirming the matter, the prime minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said: “The prime minister has asked law enforcement agencies to bring the culprits, who are involved in the killing of Nusrat, to justice, and take punitive action against them.

“Sheikh Hasina also expressed deep shock and sorrow at the tragic death of Nusrat, who was set on fire on April 6, and succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital Wednesday night.”

The prime minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her profound sympathy to the bereaved family, reports BSS.

“Nusrat died around 9.30pm last night,” Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery’s chief coordinator at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Dr Samanta Lal Sen told reporters.

Earlier, the premier directed health authorities to ensure best possible treatment for 18-year-old Nusrat.

“The prime minister had called me up and asked us to take steps to send Nusrat to Singapore for her better treatment,” Dr Sen told reporters on Monday afternoon.

He said Sheikh Hasina had issued directives to contact a Singapore hospital and “send her there, if they [the Singapore hospital] agree to treat her.”

However, doctors at the facility said Nusrat’s condition made it difficult for her treatment abroad as 80% of her body, including her respiratory system, were burnt, exposing her to breathing complications.

Nusrat had accused Feni’s Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa principal Sirajuddoula of sexually harassing her on March 27. She was reportedly exposed to Sirajuddoula’s extreme vengeance on April 6 after she went to the madrasa to appear at the HSC equivalent Alim examination.

A group of masked youths, reported to be the principal’s supporters, took Nusrat to the rooftop and set her on fire in a bid to kill her.

Feni police said the principal was already behind bars in another case while they launched a manhunt to catch the culprits who tried to kill her.
