Teenager attempts suicide after police fail to catch suspected rapist

A teenager in Savar has made an attempt to commit suicide after police reportedly failed to catch her suspected rapist.

The incident took place at the municipality’s Imandirapur on Wednesday afternoon.

Savar police, however, detained the accused after visiting the scene of the incident.

Earlier, the teenager had lodged a written complaint at Savar model police station accusing Sajib Hossain, 21, of raping her after tricking her with promises of marriage.

But police showed unwillingness to catch the accused, claimed her family members.

Feeling humiliated, the girl attempted to kill herself by hanging from the ceiling fan in her room. Sensing something wrong, family members rescued her.

The family said the teenager and Sajib, son of Abu Bakar Siddique of the same area, were in a romantic relationship for the last two years.

They claimed, Sajib took her to his home, tricked her by promising of marriage and raped her in January. He raped the girl multiple times later, whenever she insisted on getting married.

Later, at a local arbitration, both families set a date for their marriage ceremony. But Sajib fled and his family filed a case against the girl instead.

The girl’s family alleged that Savar police Sub-Inspector Rubel Hossain assured them of investigate the matter several times, but did nothing.

Reached for comment, the police officer said: “The girl lodged a written complaint on her own on Tuesday night. The investigation got delayed as I was busy with other office related work.”

“Accused Sajib, however, was detained on Wednesday evening, and a case against him is being filed,” he added.
