Journalists demonstrated in a human chain in front of the Narayanganj Press Club on Tuesday over a Narayanganj daily, Juger Chinta, having lost its publishing rights on Monday.
This was followed by the presentation of a memorandum to the information secretary through the district magistrate on the same day at noon.
The speakers at the human chain said: "The publishing rights of the popular and outspoken daily, Juger Chinta, was canceled wrongfully in Narayanganj."
"They [authorities] said Juger Chinta is being published from a different press than the allotted one. Because of this offence, Juger Chinta’s publishing rights have been revoked.
This is the first incident in the history of Bangladeshi journalism, that a newspaper has lost its publishing rights for such a minor reason," speakers added.
Addressing the district magistrate, the speakers said: "Your actions led us to take to the streets in protest. You have to answer for it. You must not leave Narayanganj unless you come up with an answer."
Speakers warned that they will continue to protest until the publishing rights of the newspaper are re-established.
The protesters in the human chain were Narayanganj Press Club Director Mahbubur Rahman, General Secretary Hassanuzzaman Bhuiyan Shamim, former directors Nafij Ashraf, Sharif Uddin Shabuj, poet Halim Azad, Juger Chinta Executive Editor Ezaz Qureshi, along with other journalists working with local and national print and electronic media in Narayanganj.
