A suspected robber has been killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Sirajganj’s Sadar upazila.
The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Shariful Islam Sharif, is from Mymensingh Sadar upazila, but was living with his uncle in Sirajganj Sadar upazila.
He was wanted for several mugging and robbery cases, according to police.
Sadar police station SI Anis Ahmed said: “After receiving a tip-off that a gang had planned a robbery on the Saidabad-Belkuchi Road, police conducted a drive there. When the robbers tried to flee, police opened fire on them.
“Sharif was shot above his right knee, but the rest of the gang managed to escape,” he added.
The SI further said that Sharif and his gang would block roads by felling trees, in order to rob commuters.
Police took the injured suspect to Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital in Sirajganj at around 5 am, where he died due to excessive bleeding while undergoing treatment at around 9:30am, according to Dr Rokon Uddin of the hospital’s emergency ward.
“The dead body has been kept in the mortuary,” he added
Sirajganj Sadar police station OC Mohammad Daud said: ““Sharif and his uncle led a gang of robbers who used to rob commuters on the Saidabad-Belkuchi Road. Several robbery cases had been filed against him.”
He added that Sharif’s body would be handed over to his family members after completion of the autopsy and primary investigation report.
