A woman in Sirajganj has been hospitalized after her husband attacked her and allegedly poured acid on her.
The incident took place in the village of Bhadraghat in Kamarkhand upazila.
Murshida married her husband when she was just 19. Against the law of the land, but adhering to societal pressure, her family paid Tk30,000 and a bhori of gold in dowry to Abu Hanif, the groom.
Since their marriage, domestic disputes had been commonplace, even as Abu Hanif frequently asked for money from his in-laws.
Just two weeks ago, Murshida’s father Golam Hossain, built a house for them.
But on Tuesday afternoon, Golam said, Abu Hanif went ballistic on Murshida, brutally attacking her and pouring acid over her lower body.
Golam said he went over with his two brothers, but they were attacked by Abu Hanif and his family.
Owever, he managed to rescue Murshida and admit her to Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital, where doctors quickly moved her to the burn unit.
Although a case was not formally filed, police visited Murshida in the hospital.
According to Kamarkhand police station Officer-in-Charge, Habibul Islam, he thinks the acid attack was a hoax, even though hospital doctors mentioned acid in the patient information sheet.
The police officer speculated the burns could have been from boiling rice.
He also said he was open to launching an investigation if anyone filed a case.
