Locals of the Mollapara union in Sunamganj on Tuesday formed a human chain demanding justice for slain haor conservation movement leader Azad Miah and the arrest of those responsible for his murder.
Azad's family members, activists of "Haor Bachao, Sunamganj Bachao" and locals formed a human chain in the Betganj Bazar around 11am on Wednesday.
At the program, speakers said that Azad’s resolute stance against corruption and judicious arbitration had irked several influential groups, and these groups were behind the murder of the man popular for his haor conservation movements.
Azad was attacked by unknown assailants on the night of March 14 in Sunamganj town, while returning home. He was taken to a local hospital and later moved to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital. From there, he was shifted to a private hospital in Sylhet, where he died of injuries in the ICU on Sunday.

Azad’s brother Aziz Miah had claimed that the attack may have been directed by Ukil Miah, an influential local who butted heads with Azad on several occasions in the past.
According to locals, Azad had filed a case over irregularities in the haor protection dam, which had greatly inconvenienced Ukil, which they believe was the impetus for the murder.
Following Azad's death, Aziz filed a murder case against six suspects including the current chairman of the Mollapara Union.
Later, on Sunday night, Sadar police arrested Ukil and he had confessed to his involvement in Azad's murder, Additional Superintendent of Police Md Hayat-Un-Nabi said.
Ukil was shown arrested in the murder case. The rest of the suspects are yet to be arrested.
