Worker killed in steel factory accident in Narayanganj

A worker was killed after getting burnt in molten iron in Narayanganj.

The accident took place at the Rahim Steel Mills  Co Ltd in the early hours of Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Suruj Mia, 37. He was a crane operator and was from Manikganj district.

When reporters went to collect information about the death, they were barred from entering the factory premises by security personnel.

A high ranking official of the mill, seeking anonymity, said: “The accident happened at 3am Saturday when molten iron from a container leaked into the factory floor, which burned Suruj and killed him on the spot.”

Sonargaon police station members have recovered the body. At the time of the accident, Suruj’s two brothers were also working there.  

“The company will compensate for the accident and will also employ a family member of Suruj,” the official said.

Sonargoan police station SI Salimul Haque said: “The body of the deceased is at the station now. The whole body was burnt. We will take necessary steps about it.”

Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Mamunur Rashid said: “We are investigating the matter to find out what actually happened.”
