7 members of dam construction committee held in Sunamganj

Police have arrested seven members, including three presidents of three Project Implementation Committees (PIC), assigned to build crop protection dams in Tahirpur upazila.

Police conducted drives citing irregularities at the development projects near Matiyan Haor, and arrested individuals concerned on Tuesday.

The detained are: Monsad Miya, Sirajul Islam, Mizanur Rahman, Tofazzel Hossain, Jamal Akhanji, Majnu Shah, and Humayun Kabir.

Police detained the PIC members after witnessing unsatisfactory progress at the projects near Matiyan Haor.

Tahirpur police station OC, Nandan Kanti Dhar, confirmed and said: “Police conducted drives after receiving complaints of insufficient progress at projects 38, 46, and 47, and detained the responsible PIC members.”

According to the PIC members’ statements, they were struggling after the excavator machine got stuck in the Hashmara River, claiming that 50% construction work had been completed for project 38.

Nandan Kanti Dhar, also a project monitoring committee member, said that the state minister for the water development board had also expressed disappointment after his recent visit to the Matiyan Haor project.

The Water Development Board undertook dam construction projects worth Tk13 crore 41 lakh, to protect crops in Tahirpur upazila.
