Home minister: Bangladesh won’t allow drug smugglers, trespassers

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has firmly stated that Bangladesh will not allow drug peddlers and smugglers as well as illegal trespassers to enter the country’s borders.

He on Saturday further warned that the government will not spare anyone when the security and safety of the nation is at stake, and the administration will take tougher action to the highest extent of the law.

The minister made the remarks while addressing the surrendering ceremony of drug dealers in Cox’s Bazar as the chief guest.

Referring to the hundreds of people who attended the ceremony to witness the event, he said this was a clear indication that the local community rejected all forms of drug trade.

The home minister pointed out that Cox’s Bazar was one of the biggest tourist spots in Bangladesh and employment opportunities for locals will continue to grow with the implementation of ongoing development projects.

He said the government will do its best to rehabilitate those who surrender to the law.

“The government will assist them in returning to a normal life and will form drug abuse prevention committees at the thana level with support from the police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB),” he added.

Till Saturday afternoon, 102 drug dealers surrendered at the event, along with 30 locally made firearms and 350,000 yaba pills.
