A youth has been killed in a so-called gunfight between two criminal gangs in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The deceased, Shahab Uddin, 35, hailed from Nunachhari village under the same upazila. The incident occurred around 4:30am in the Kalmadia hilly area on Tuesday.
Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Maheshkhali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Provash Chandra Dhar said: “Acting on a tip-off that two criminal gangs were engaged in a gunfight in the Kalmadia hilly area, a police team arrived on the scene to investigate.
“Upon sighting the police, the criminals escaped, leaving injured Shahab Uddin behind. He died while being taken to a nearby hospital. Police seized five guns from the scene.”
Police sources said Shahab Uddin was accused in 16 cases filed in connection with murder, terrorism, and possessing illegal firearms.
His body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue.
