10 injured in fight over UP election candidacy

10 supporters of rival nomination aspirants were injured on Sunday in a scuffle ahead of the Upazila Parishad election in Bagherpara upazila of Jessore.

Locals said that during an extended meeting of the upazila’s Awami League unit, supporters from two factions had a showdown, which resulted in a chase and counter-chase between both the faction activists, resulting in 10 being injured.

The activists, followers of UP chairman-aspirants Dilu Patwary and Rajib Ray, were taken to Bagherpara Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Dilu Patwary refuted any claims of his side instigating the violence, citing it as a “heated argument”.

Officer-in-charge of Bagherpara police station Jasim Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune that it was only an aggravated showdown, which both sides later cleared out mutually.
