Suspected robber killed in Brahmanbaria ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber has been killed in a “gunfight” with police at Hazipur village in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria early Saturday. According to police, deceased Jahirul Islam alias Kailya Jahir, 35, was a member of an inter-district robber gang. Three policemen, including Kasba Sub-Inspector Monirul Islam, were injured during the “gunfight”. Confirming the incident, Kasba police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mohiuddin said acting on a tip-off that a robber gang was preparing for robbery at Hazipur village of Binauti union, police conducted a drive in the area around 4am. “Sensing the presence of police, the robbers hurled improvised bombs and opened fire at the law enforcers forcing them to fire back,” he added. The OC further said police recovered the body of Jahirul after the “gunfight”. Police also recovered one pipe gun, four rounds of cartridges, two machetes and 12 improvised bombs from the spot.
