India has deported 21 Bangladeshi nationals who had been detained and sentenced to different jail terms for illegally entering the country.
After serving different jail terms, they were handed over to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) by Border Security Force (BSF) in the no-man’s-land area at Shaola land port the Beanibazar upazila of Sylhet on Saturday.
Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and Assam police brought them directly to Sutarkandi land port from Assam’s Silchar detention camp. The Indian law enforcers then contacted Bangladesh’s border guard and handed over the detainees around 4pm.
According to BGB and police sources, the returned Bangladeshis had illegally entered India through different border points of Assam and Tripura states. Most of them had either gone in search of work or were on their way back after a visit. They were caught by Indian police and BSF personnel. After having served different jail terms, the Indian government has taken the initiative to deport them.
Beanibazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abani Shanker said among the 21 Bangladeshis, 15 had already been handed over to their respective family members and six are currently in Beanibazar police custody. Their relatives had been informed and they will be handed over as soon as the relatives arrive.
BGB 52 Battalion Captain Lt Col Ahmed Yusuf Jamil PSC said these people, hailing from different districts of Bangladesh, entered India without valid documents. They were detained and had served different jail terms in Indian prison. Finally India has sent the detainees back and BGB has received them at border port.
