Islami Andolan to submit memo seeking fresh elections

Islami Andolan Bangladesh election contenders will submit a memorandum to President Abdul Hamid on January 16 demanding cancellation of the 11th parliamentary election results and seeking fresh elections under a nonpartisan government.

A statement signed by Abdul Kaiyum Ahmad publicity secretary of IAB on Monday, said ‘Hand Fan’ symbol candidates contesting the national polls will hold a meeting on January 16 to discuss the December 30 poll results and will submit a memorandum to President Abdul Hamid.

“The election did not reflect the will of the people. Rather, it was a one-sided election marred by irregularities,” it said.

“The rights of the people were hijacked through vote rigging. People could not exercise their fundamental rights and their right to vote has been curtailed,” it said.

Attacks on political parties and cases being filed by ruling party cadres and police continued post polls, the statement further said.

It demanded cancellation of the December 30 poll results and fresh elections under a non-partisan government.

IAB candidates contested in 298 constituencies of the 300, but failed to secure a single seat.

The party obtained 1,236,983 votes out of the total of 80,259,172 votes cast, according to the Election Commission tally.
