Ansar commander strangled to death in Kushtia

An Ansar and VDP commander has been strangled to death in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia, in a fight with another man over the duty roster for the 11th general election.

The incident took place at Farakpur village in the upazila’s Mathurapur union around 10am on Saturday, confirmed Daulatpur police station’s Assistant Sub-Inspector Saheb Ali.

The deceased, Khalil Mondol, 54, was an assistant commander of an Ansar platoon which had been deployed as part of the security force for Sunday’s election, said Daulatpur Ansar official Hamida Parvin.

The man accused of killing Khalil was identified as Jadu Mia, son of Ajer Ali of the same village.

According to the victim’s family and the police, Jadu confronted Khalil about not being on the election duty roster as a security volunteer, which led to a scuffle when the Ansar commander was on his way to work in the morning.

At one point Khalil lost consciousness, suffocating when Jadu pulled on the muffler Khalil was wearing round his neck.

The Ansar officer was rushed to Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex, but duty doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Daulatpur police station Officer-in-Charge Shahadat Hossain said Khalil’s son has filed a murder case over the incident. Accused Jadu is on the run.

Police recovered Khalil’s body from the hospital and sent it to the Kushtia General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
