Open manhole now kills teenager in Gazipur

Details of the ill-fated girl, believed to be around 16, could not be known immediately. Sub-Inspector Md Zakir Hossain of Bhogra police outpost, quoting witnesses, said that the girl had slipped into a drain through the manhole close to Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway along Peyara Bagan area around 10am. She was washed away by the strong current before people nearby could understand the situation. Police recovered her with the help of locals after half an hour and took her to a local hospital. Dr Pranay Bhushan Das, resident physician of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital, said that the girl had been brought dead to the hospital around 10:30am. On Monday, a middle-aged man, also unidentified, died after falling into an open manhole in Dhaka's Paltan area. The next day, the High Court in a suo moto rule asked the government to explain why the officials concerned should not be held responsible for negligence and face legal action for the fatality.
