A suspected pirate has reportedly been killed in a "gunfight" with RAB at Magnama, under Pekua upazila, in Cox's Bazar.
The deceased – Tarek, 30 – hailing from Uttar Dhurong area in Kutubdia, was killed early on Wednesday, reports UNB.
Maj Mehedi Hasan, RAB 7 camp company commander, said: "Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB 7 conducted a drive in Magnama area—where two gangs of pirates had gathered to split ransom money.
"Upon spotting RAB, the criminals started shooting at the RAB members, forcing the elite force to fire back in self-defence," he said.
Tarek was shot in the gunfight, Mehedi said. He was admitted to the Upazila Health Complex where the duty doctors declared him dead.
RAB also recovered one pistol, two guns, 23 cartridges and four bullet casings from the site.
Kutubdia police station Didarul Ferdous said Tarek was a listed criminal and had been involved with piracy for a long time. He was also accused in five cases—including arms dealing and robbery cases.
Tarek's body has been sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
