Police arrests 1 in rape of Tangail disabled woman

Police have arrested the main suspect in the Tangail disabled woman rape case.

He was arrested on Thursday morning from Tangail's Bhuapur Bazar area.

The arrested suspect has been identified as Alam Khandakar alias Bishu Mia, 45, son of late Younus Khandaker of the same area.

He was the driver of the bus in which the disabled woman was raped.

Alam Khandker gave a confessional statement to the court of Tangail Senior Judicial Magistrate Shamsul Alam.

Police was able to arrest the driver of the bus about three months after the incident occurred.

The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Kabirul Haque, toldthe Dhaka Tribune: "The driver of the bus was in hiding for a long time. Responding to a tip-off, we conducted a raid in the area on Thursday, early morning. He was arrested during the raid. Later, the primary accused, the bus driver, confessed his crimes to the court. Following the proceedings the honorable judge decided to send him to jail."

"Other suspects of the rape case, the bus supervisor Md Ershad, and the drivers assistant Nazmul Hossain, are currently in jail," he added.

Earlier on August 30 midnight, the driver of the bus, which plies the Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge route, raped the woman with mental disabilities on the vehicle at the Bangabandhu Bridge East bus stand, while his assistant Nazmul Hossain stood guard.

Contacted by locals, a police patrol team later rescued the woman in her 20s and arrested Nazmul, but the driver Alam Khandaker, 45, managed to flee.

Following the arrest of the driver's assistant, Ershad, the supervisor of the bus, was arrested on September 2 by Bangabandhu Bridge East police station.

Family members said the woman had left her sister’s house in Dhaka alone without telling anyone and was on the way to her Kushtia home. When she went missing, they filed a general diary at the capital’s Sabujbagh police station.
