Embankment damaged: 2 villages flooded in Satkhira

Two villages and more than 100 fish enclosures were flooded due to the damage of Chakla flood embankment in Assasuni upazila in Satkhira district.

Approximately 20ft of the flood embankment was damaged in Hail Char in Chakla village of Pratapnagar union on Friday night.

Pratapnagar Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Zakir Hossain said: “The Chakla flood embankment was in bad condition for a long time. Despite notifying the Bangladesh Water Development Board several times, no action was taken. Last night (Friday), the embankment got severely damaged due to strong tides in the Kopotakhho river. What followed was that two villages and over 100 fish enclosures got flooded.

“The local Water Development Board is yet to visit the affected area and start repair work. Our amateur attempts to restore the flood embankment went in vain due to the strong and vicious tides. If necessary steps are not taken quickly in order to rebuild the embankment, more areas will be affected. This will result in huge loss of life and even more damage,” he added.

In response to the proceedings, Satkhira District Commissioner S M Mostafa Kamal said: “I have instructed Assasuni upazila executive officer to inspect the site and assess the situation. The local Water Development Board has been instructed to take quick measures in order to repair the damaged embankment.”
