A man has been killed in a "gunfight" with police in Uzirpur upazila of Barisal.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning. The deceased, Rabiul Alam, 35, was allegedly involved with the murder of Jalla Union Parishad (UP) Chairman and Awami League of Uzirpur upazila President Biswajit Halder Nantu.
The incident was confirmed by Barisal Superintendent of Police (SP)Saiful Islam.
According to the SP, acting on a tip-off, a team of police arrested Rabiul from Madaripur on Monday night. Rabiul had six cases lodged against him at different police stations.
Based on information provided by Rabiul, police went to the Fultola area of Uzirpur to recover weapons in the early hours of Tuesday. Upon reaching there, the police were ambushed by a group of miscreants, and Rabiul died in the ensuing gunfight.
His body has been sent to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital, the SP said.
Police also recovered several sharp weapons and one firearm from the spot.
On September 21, a group of unknown miscreants shot and killed UP Chairman Nantu in Harta Bazar of Jalla. The next day, Nantu's father Sukumar Halder lodged a murder case against 32 named and 8 unnamed people at Uzirpur police station. Until now, 20 of the accused have been arrested. Rabiul was one of the accused named in the case.
