Two sisters tortured, evicted by land grabbers in Moulvibazar

Two sisters were allegedly tortured and thrown out of their house by land grabbers in the Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar on January 23. The victims are Afia Begum, 32, and Safia Begum, 35. “After my husband’s demise, I used to live with my mother Subeda Begum and sister Safia, along with my children,” Afia told the Dhaka Tribune. “Right after our mother’s death, our neighbours Ahmed Miah and Ilias Miah started threatening us so that we would leave our land. “I wrote to the Kamalganj upazila nirbahi officer about the incident on January 8 and sought justice, but the authorities did not take any action. “Later we filed a general diary with Kamalganj police station on January 23. This made the land grabbers more furious, and they threw us out of our house after torturing us,” Afia claimed. Afia went to the police station the following day to file a case over the incident, but the police station did not register the complaint. As such, they took shelter in their elder sister’s home, where they are currently staying. Elder sister Sufia Begum, who is a Union Parishad member, made a written complaint to the police superintendent of Moulvibazar on February 19. Subsequently, the land grabbers attacked them again. Moulvibazar Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Ashfaqurzaman confirmed that he had received the complaint when contacted on Wednesday.
