40 villagers held over attack on DB police in Jessore

Police have detained around 40 people from Matikumra village of Jhikargacha upazila in Jessore for assaulting members of the Detective Branch of police (DB).  

They were detained on Friday for assaulting four members of DB police during a drive to arrest a listed drug trader, reports UNB.

Mainul Haque, superintendent of Jessore Police (SP) said the villagers from Matikumra attacked four DB police constables, Murad Hossain, Shimul Hossain, Mamun Hossain and the driver of their vehicle Shaon, suspecting them to be fake DB members, when the law enforcers went there to arrest a listed drug trader.

They were rescued by other policemen, the SP said. Among the four injured, two are in critical condition.

Following the attack, police conducted a drive and arrested at least 40 people, including local UP member Faruk Hossain and his nephew Asadul Islam.

Villagers claimed most male residents of the village fled to avoid mass arrest.

At least 80 people were arrested, claimed the villagers.
