700 trees of Thakurgaon temple felled, 1 arrested

A man has been arrested after miscreants felled 700 trees belonging to Iskcon temple in Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon district.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday. A case - with the names of 15 people - was filed in this connection with the Pirganj police station Saturday morning.

Koushik Chandra Roy was arrested later that day.

President of the temple committee Promananda Roy said: "Two years ago, 700 mango trees were planted in around one hectare area of temple land. Miscreants cut down all the trees in the early hours of Friday."

After verbally informing the matter to the local chairman and police, Promananda lodged the case with the Pirganj police station on Saturday.

According to the case statement, the trees were cut down as retaliation from the descendants of the claimants of temple lands, who had a long-standing clash with the temple committee.

Koushik Chandra Roy, the arrestee, is the son of Bolobhadra Roy, the person who donated over 3 hectares of land to Iskcon temple; around one hectare was used to plant the mango trees.

Officer-in-Charge of Pirganj police station Bazlur Rashid confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

"The investigation officer has already inspected the site where the incident occurred. Legal actions are being taken based on the investigations," he said.
