390 fishermen from six districts of Barisal have been jailed over different spans of time for netting mother ilish, defying the 22-day ban on netting ilish which began on October 7 of this year.
Assistant Director of the Divisional Fisheries Office Azizur Rahman informed us by saying: “So far, Tk5,27,900 has been collected as penalty from the fisherman while 3,200kg of ilish and approximately 14,000 meters of illegal fishing net have been seized from them.”
He further said that the ban was imposed on hunting ilish in the rivers and the sea for 22 days with the aim of ilish conservation during the main reproduction season.
From then onwards till Tuesday midnight, under the leadership of the Fisheries Department, 431 mobile courts have been sent out in six districts of Barisal with a total of 802 encroachments and 344 suits filed.
