Three people have been killed and at least 32 others injured in two separate bus accidents in Gopalganj on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as: Mariam Begum, 55, of Orakandi village of Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj; bus driver Sobet Sheikh, 65, of Hiron village of Kotalipara upazila; and Saiful Islam, 18, of Kotalipara upazila.
The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Gopalganj, Muksudpur, and Khulna, as well as at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
An accident occurred on the Baritala-Muksudpur Road when a speeding bus lost control and hit a roadside tree, at Chaocha village of Muksudpur upazila around 8am. A passenger was killed and 15 others injured.
Muksudpur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Mostafa Kamal Pasha said the deceased Mariam Begum was taken to a hospital, where the duty doctor declared her dead.
In another incident at around 11:30am, a local bus turned over on the Gopalganj-Kotalipara Road near Bhojargati village of Gopalganj Sadar upazila. The bus driver and assistant were killed, and 17 passengers injured.
Gopalganj Sadar police station sub-inspector (SI) Nazrul Islam said driver Sobet Sheikh and assistant Saiful Islam were both admitted to Gopalganj General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor pronounced them dead.
The bus was going from Kotalipara to Gopalganj, the police officer added.
Nur Hasan, 7, son of Ibrahim of Alithapara village under Kotalipara upazila, has been admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
