5 held, 2 cops closed over Barisal UP chairman killing

Five people were held and two policemen were closed after Jalla union parishad (UP) chairman Bishwajit Haldar Nantu was gunned down by some unidentified miscreants in Ujirpur upazila of Barisal on Friday night.

The arrested are Taimul Islam, Panna, Siraj Sikder, Ayub Ali, Harishat Roy and a former UP member.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Humayun Kabir said the five were detained and interrogated by cops from Friday night to Saturday noon over the murder.

Moreover, Jalla union’s Kurulia police outpost in-charge Sub-Inspectors (SI) Mizan and AB Yusuf were withdrawn to police line, the ASP added.

Meanwhile, locals have set ablaze a three-storey building, vandalized several shops and staged demonstrations in different places of Ujirpur upazila over the incident. 

On Friday night, unidentified gunmen killed Bishwajit Haldar Nantu, 40, chairman of Jalla union council and president of Jalla union unit Awami League of Wazirpur in Barishal.

Locals said a group of gunmen riding motorbikes came to Bishwajit’s business house at Karfa Bazar around 9:00pm and opened fire on him and immediately fled the scene. One Nihan Haldar also sustained bullet injuries during the attack

Bishwajit was immediately taken to Gaila Health Complex in Agailjhara and then shifted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal. Physicians at the emergency department of the hospital declared him dead. Injured Nihan was admitted to the hospital.

Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital Director M Bakir Hossain said three marks of bullet injuries were found in Bishwajit’s body.

Member of Parliament Talukder Mohammad Yunus has condemned the murder and demanded exemplary punishment to people involved with it.
