26 killed in road crashes across country

At least 26 people were killed and many others injured in separate accidents on roads in five districts across the country on Monday.

In Narsingdi, at least 11 people were killed after a head-on collision between a Dhaka-bound bus and a human haulier on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Belabo upazila.

The incident took place in Jongua area around 8:30pm Monday, confirmed Belabo police OC Javed Mahmud.

He said at least five or six other people were also injured and admitted to several local hospitals.

In Feni, six people were killed and six others injured when a cattle-laden truck smashed into a Chittagong-bound microbus in Chhagalnaiya upazila around 3am in the morning.

Six people had died on the spot after the truck rammed into the microbus at Muhuriganj, police said quoting locals.

The district’s Deputy Commissioner Md Wahiduzzaman donated Tk10,000 to the families of each deceased and Tk5,000 to the families of each injured.

In Gaibandha, four people were killed and another injured when a Dhaka-bound bus crashed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Chaumatha area on Dhaka-Rangpur Highway in Polashbari upazila.

The accident took place in Moheshpur around 5pm Monday, Gobindaganj highway police OC Abul Basar said.

Police impounded the bus, but its driver managed to flee, he said.

In Nilphamari, a man died in the early hours of Monday from his injuries sustained during a crash that took place between his motorcycle and an auto-rickshaw in Domar on Sunday night, police said.

Another person was injured and hospitalized in that incident.

In Gazipur, two teenage girls were killed and three others injured after a covered van crashed into the rickshaw they were on in Natunbazar area of Konabari Monday.

Salna highway police OC Basudeb Sinha said the incident took place on Dhaka-Tangail Highway around 1:15pm.

In Jhenaidah, a college student was killed and another injured after a truck ran over their motorcycle in Sadar upazila’s Panchmile area.

Sadar police OC Emdadul Haque Sheikh said the accident took place on Jhenaidah-Magura Highway Monday afternoon.

In Tangail, another motorcyclist was killed after being run over by a bus in Bhatkura area on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway.

Highway police officials said the incident on Monday morning also left another person injured.
